Zine Reviews

Return to Index

I received so many zines that I couldn't review them all, after all this isn't Fact Sheet 5. All those who sent me their zines will receive Pig Meat when it comes out. I'm slow so have patience. Support all zines, they are the alternative voice, send them money, contribute, or start your own.

Home-Made #1 - 16pg A5 Free!

One of a number of zines brought out recently from Perth girls (am I allowed to encourage girls in this politically correct scene? Or do I just ignore? Am I a typical male Pig [Meat]?) Home-Made is the brain-child of a good friend of mine named Simone (that must explain the good Pig Meat #7 review) who did the Creaks interviews in this very issue. Home-Made is a zine for indi personalities, well that's what the cover says anyway. It has an interview with Tucker B. Wilson (or the Tucker B's,) Bluetile Lounge review, Geoff Symons from O! interview (This ones a bit boring I must admit, Geoff just wasn't feeling too well,) an interview with my favourite radio-personality - that being the one and only Sefton Payze of the 'Big Burns and Goatee show' on 100FM (now cancelled,) Vinyl (CD?) reviews and Zine reviews. Home-Made is cool, hep and free. If you dig it then get it! Address: 12/445 Stirling Hwy, Cottesloe WA 6011. - This address is no longer active!

Roll 'Em #1 - 8pg A5 Free!

Another girl zine (girls can rock too, or should I not hype it up?) and another FREE one. Roll `Em is by Marsha Roana (is that your real name? I actually know it's not, like you know my name's not Nick Potter, just keep it quiet down the back, will you!) a wonderful young lady who knows where it's at. From reading this zine I found out some truly amazing facts about Perth; Did you know that Brett Rixon from the 2nd line up of the Scientists is dead and buried in this city? I didn't, but do now. Did you also know that Supernaught came from good old sunny Perth, I recommend you hear 'I like it both ways,' note the phone call part way through the song, when I was young I thought that was my dad on the phone and it somehow got onto my tape. Also in the zine is a Panel Beater interview, although it's more like a Luke Marinovich interview where he rightly goes on about how cool DEVO are. There is also a Jon Spencer interview donated by the Harvey people. A mammoth Eurockeenes report sits at the back of the zine along with reviews of gigs, records and zines. Address: Po Box 8150, Subiaco East, WA 6008.

Cigarette Burns #2 - 16pg A4 $1-50

The first Cigarette Burns came out as a school project. Mike has since bought his own photocopier (being my old crap one I sold to him for $100 and the drive belt broke costing him another $200 - life's like that) and has improved it's content greatly (although the interview with me let the team down). Inside you may be able to find interviews with The Scroungers, Pagan Grind punk zine, Inebriated, Spiral Objectives distro, Excretion, Chickenshit, Runt, Ecocentric Records, Burma, Minute Minder and finally Pig Meat zine. There are an amazing 14 Rupture reviews along with others. Address: 49 Somers St, Belmont, WA 6104.

M4 #17 - 36pg A5 $2-50

After 6 years and 17 issues of M4, Clinton Green has decided to call it a day for reasons spelled out in the penultimate issue. The final issue contains: cartoons; Fruitarianism - the fruit only diet; Making friends at Melbourne Uni or anywhere else; an interview with Mark Of Cain; interview with the Meanies; interview with Spiderbait; interview with Melbourne's Cane; interview with Scroungers research report on Australian zines; gig reviews; music reviews and finally zine reviews. The layout may look plain but the content makes up for it. Address: Po Box 263, Melton, Vic 3337. Email: [email protected]

Handbuilt By Perverts #1 - 8pg A4 FREE!

This is a fanzine devoted to Carter the Unstoppable Sex Machine. Why you would want to start a fanzine about that band? I personally hate the band and everything they stand for but, each to their own I suppose. Since this fanzine is devoted to Carter you probably think I won't have anything good to say about it. Well, your wrong. It has stuff on other bands too. I liked the free condoms (a trick also used by Penii), I liked the Tintin comic, I liked the Yummy Fur article, and the artwork. It also has reviews on the late great D.A.A.S., music and a photo of their mum from the 60's (she is LUVURLIE). If you like Carter then seek this out, but if you don't then I wouldn't bother. Address: PO BOX 147, Mosman Park, WA 6012.- This address is no longer active!

The Outhouse #2 - 48pg A5 $1-50

The issue that was paid for by hocking a stereo; this man must be dedicated. One of the better punk/hardcore zine about. This zine from Adelaide is filled with interviews, news, comics and reviews. Some of the highlights found inside are: an interview with Pet Earwig, an interesting interview with Dirty Dick Disease of Cheesyknob productions, and Throat Slug. Address: PO BOX 34, Hindmarsh, SA 5007

Mailman #3 - 51pg A4 $3-00

Mailman has managed to ask all the bands it interviewed the same questions. The bands that got to answer these questions were: Damien Lovelock (he's not really a band), Fluf, Superchunk, Ride, Crent and Red Cross. There is also interviews with Linda Montano - an American performance artist, a fantastic interview with the Meteorological officer at the Davis Antarctic base, Bell Hooks - the African American feminist is interviewed with a slight lean on her dealings with Madonna. One of the funniest things in Mailman is the job applications it wrote on behalf of various musicians to different firms who had advertised. Motorhead's Lemmy didn't get a job as a Graduate Metallurgist, and the late Ian Curtis didn't get a job as an Assistant Librarian. Not very well laid out (they lost access to a desk top publisher,) but is still a good read. Address: Po Box 12'292 A'Beckett St, Melbourne, Vic 3000.

Numb #4 - 20pg A5

This zine has no music what-so-ever and I like that. What it does have is juggling made easy, George James enters hell, personal hates and loving the military. Address: Po Box 509, Camberwell, Vic 3124.

Blender #3 - 24pg A4 $1-50

This is the Xmas edition of Queensland's Blender zine. Blender is a cut`n' paste job, like early Pig Meats. This issue contains some fairly old interviews with Crow, Magic Dirt, Disneyfist, Screamfeeder, and Not From There. A Livid Festival review, ZZZ Market Day review, zine and music reviews. Most of the Interviews appear to be by mail and therefore are a bit bare. If you get hold of this zine you will also receive some dodgy stickers of some of the bands interviewed. Address: 160 School Road, Kallangur, Qld. 4503.

Misuse #4 - 28pg A5 $?

Previous issues of Misuse have been small one page things, but this issue has blown out to a decent size. Even when it was small I liked it and now it's bigger I like it even better. Chris scatters his cartoons throughout the zine and also cartoons by others, such as D.Nichols. There are interviews with Ricaine, The Sea Scouts, Hakin Bey, and mail artist Crackerjack Kid. Some of the stuff in Misuse is taken from the net (which I don't think is such a bad thing, I think.) I particularly liked the Adventures in Carlton #51 story, I chuckled out loud as I read it and my friends asked if I was OK. Critical Mass Melbourne isn't the same as Critical Mass Perth, it's a protest group against the growing car culture, and you can read about it in this rag. Also reviews and Eraser Stamps. Get it now! Address: Po Box 372, Carlton South, Vic, 3053

Trash Junkie #1 - $2.50

Trash Junkie is my favourite type of zine. Known as a personal zine, it's a sort of autobiographical account of events in the person's life. You either love these types of zines or you hate them. Trash Junkie is written by Debbie, a self confessed obsessive/compulsive, and like the title indicates, she is a Trash Junkie. Debbie's life revolves around TV and gossip magazines, which are featured throughout her zine. Read of Debbie's experience with a friend's father who got off on pigs mating and then tried to apply it to poor Deb. Also featured in Trash Junkie are quizzes, mazes ("See how quickly you can reach Dave"), Top 10's, Diary extracts, Kevin's 7" addiction, Are you Nick Cave's Dream Girl?, I'm a Kinder Surprise Junkie (aren't we all?) and lots of other trash. Addess: Po Box I204, North Fitzroy, Vic 3068.

Poindexter #5 - 14pg A4 Free!

Oops, I almost forget to review my favourite Perth zine, thanks to Luke for reminding me. As infrequent as Pig Meat, yet poignant in every respect. Poindexter is mint-ox and is leading the revolution in the come back of well crafted words such as that beauty. I read it from cover to cover when I first received it, but can't exactly remember what's in it so I'll do the usual thing and flick through to remind me, here goes: It's got a Cave Clan adventure, a sexy Fluf interview, John Kelly from Anti-Anti Zine says it's OK in WA, KFC's reviewed, an interview with the new wavers Rupture, an interview with Buzzov*en, the ultimate interview with the man at Craft Decor (you've seen the adds, now read what the man has to say - fascinating,) an interview with the Beatnik Termites, cartoons and reviews. Fucking hot and just the right amount of Devo for my liking. Highly recommended mang. Address: Po Box 8150, Subiaco East, WA 6008.

Shabby #2 - 20pg A4 $3.50

A well produced, laid out and researched zine, reminiscent of Perth's Vortex. This issue contains interviews with John Strohm (Velo Deluxe, Antenna, Blake Babies, and Lemonheads,) Nic Dalton (The Plunderers, Love Positions, The Lemonheads, and Godstar,) Sandpit, Eric's Trip, and The Fauves. Each interview is complete with a discography. There are also a few reviews, a cartoon by Neale Blanden, and each page number is part of an amazing fact, for instance page number 5 says "The 5 biggest selling items in Australian supermarkets this year are (in order): 1/ Coca-Cola, 2/ Cherry Ripe, 3/Nestle Condensed Milk, 4/ Tally Ho Cigarette Papers, 5/ Mars Bars. Address: Po Box 2193, Ringwood North, Vic 3134.

Woozy #8 - 64pg A5 $2.50

Ex-Perthite's Iain and Laura continue to bring out this Lo-Fi, DIY, Alternative thinking zine that's always worth going out of your way to get. It's packed with shitloads of interesting stuff, too much to mention here, stand-out items include: Bedtime Stories for Squatters, 10 ways to get slightly closer to the truth, Can it be punk and acoustic at the same time?, Johnny Cash, Stinky Fire Engine, Sea Scouts Speak Out, 20 Reasons to Stay in Bed Forever, Cartoons and more, more, more. Address: Po Box 4434, Melbourne University, Parkville Vic 3052

I Hate Myself & Want to Dye (My Hair) #2 -14pg A6 Free.

This mini zine is full of hate, if you exist you will be hated by someone, and you will also hate, so why not wright a zine about it. This zine is fuckin' funny and doesn't pander to the "Politically Correct" fad what-so-ever, with hot titles such as : I hate Vegetarians, I Hate Rock 'n' Roll Musos, Tex, Don&Charlie give me the shits!, Rock 'n' Roll Elitism, Primus = Prog Rock = Boring Crap, I Hate People Who Hate JJJ, Fuckin' Music Reviewers. Address: Po Box 394, Manly, NSW 2095.
